On 28 September 2022, starting at 9:30 AM (Nikola Pašić Square 11, 4th floor, hall 136), the Institute for European Studies (IES) from Belgrade, in cooperation with the Faculty of Law of the University Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek (PRAVOS), organises the International Scientific Conference entitled:
Environmental Legislation and Sustainable Development – The State of Play in Serbia and Experiences of the Croatian Eu Membership
Climate change, problems of air, water and soil pollution, the issue of waste management and the rise of the global average temperature have, in the past years and decades, put the importance of environmental topics in the focus of the interest of both general public and scientific community. Moreover, environmental protection is one of the most important areas of activity of the European Union (EU), to which a constantly growing legislation and an increasingly significant budget funds are dedicated. Serbia’s negotiations on EU membership, as well as its general progress in the protection of the environment and natural resources, crucially depend on the understanding of the processes and tendencies in the adoption and application of European legislation in this area, as well as on the application of the concept of sustainable development in an increasing number of its public policies. As the last country to join the Union, the Republic of Croatia has, during the previous years, gone through a deep normative transformation of its environmental legislation and practices, which, in addition to the active participation of citizens, innovative public policies and technological development, crucially depends on the insights that social, humanistic (and especially legal) sciences can provide in this area. The goal of the Conference is to contribute to a better understanding and greater visibility of the issue of legal protection of the environment at the national and European level.
The Conference takes place in the context of the eponymous international scientific project, jointly carried out by the Institute for European Studies and the Faculty of Law of the University Josip Juraj Strossmayer in Osijek and supported by Hanns Seidel Foundation. During the six phases of its implementation, the Project gathers over 30 members of scientific and academic communities from Serbia, Croatia and other EU member states, but also the representatives of central, county and local authorities and of the civil society. The Project is based on the Agreement on inter-institutional cooperation between IES and PRAVOS, singed in February 2020, and it is jointly managed by Dunja Duić, associate professor, and Uroš
Ćemalović, senior research associate.
The conference can be followed live. The conference can be also followed online, via Zoom, with a prior registration on the following link:
