The collection of papers Yugoslav-Spanish Parallels (edited by Dr. Rajko Petrović, Institute for European Studies, 2023, 259 pages) is the result of the scholarly conference “Yugoslavian-Spanish parallels: between delusions and reality” organized on June 29, 2023 at the Institute of European Studies. Various topics and areas are covered in the collection, from the point of view of different scientific disciplines, with the aim of explaining the similarities and differences between two countries that are often compared – the former Yugoslavia and Spain. Ten authors, two of whom are distinguished professors, as well as respected and expert domestic professors and young scientists and researchers, analyzed the quantity and quality of similarities and differences between Spain and Yugoslavia, the comparative experiences of Spain and Yugoslavia in connection with the periods of authoritarianism and democratization, the role of Spain in the Yugoslav crisis, the Spanish-Yugoslav constitutional parallels, the attitude of the leading European countries towards the declaration of independence of Croatia, Slovenia and Catalonia, the Spanish experience in the field of cross-border cooperation and the possibility of its application in the post-Yugoslav area, the simultaneous path in the decline of democracy in interwar Yugoslavia, Spain and Germany, a comparison of the Islamic tradition in Spain and Yugoslavia, the Catalan-Spanish dispute throughout history, and sports ties between Yugoslavia and Spain.
