Biography

Goran Nikolić was born on 2 October 1974 in Ivanjica (Western Serbia). He graduated from the Faculty of Economics of the University of Belgrade (BA and MA degrees). He obtained his Ph.D. with a thesis ”Structural adjustment of Serbia’s exports to import demands of the European Union” in March 2009. In March 2001 he started working at the Institute of Foreign Trade, where he held the title of Research Assistant. From 2002/2003, until May 2009 when he was engaged by the Institute of European Studies, he worked in the Serbian Chamber of Commerce (PKS) – Center for Scientific Research and Economic Analysis.

His main topics of research were the analysis of the particular structure of Serbian foreign trade, the dinar exchange rate, balance of payments, influence of the European integration on trade flows, international economics, and economic history.

He has published many scientific papers and studies and participated in the work of dozen scientific events of national importance (especially in the organization is the Scientific Association of Economists of Serbia, which he is a member of).

In 2013 he was – within the UNDP project – an adviser to the Minister of finance and economy for Macroeconomics. From April 8 to 28, 2018, at the invitation of the Chinese Ministry of Trade, Nikolić attended professional training in China (The 2018 Training Program on Integration into Global Value Chain for Developing Countries – Countries along the „Belt and Road“).

At the London School of Economy on September 22nd, 2021 he participated at Conference: The third LSEE-CEFTA Academic Network Workshop on International Trade with presentation: Is strengthening mutual cooperation in the WB right policy?

On July 5, 2023, he participated, together with Ivan Nikolić, at the The Great Silk Road Conference: Challenges and Opportunities for the Development of Eurasia (organized by Bournemouth University and Westminster International University in Tashkent), with the topic: Perspectives of enhancing cooperation – Are rapid acceleration of bilateral merchandise trade and Chinese FDI inflows into Serbia can be sustained?

On November 26, 2020, he participated in the international scientific conference Modern Problems of Economic Growth in the Countries of Central-Eastern and South-Eastern Europe of the Economic Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow). At the invitation of St. Petersburg’s State University Nikolić participated in the work of the international conference entitled: Evolution of the International Trading System: Prospects and Challenges (October 24-25, 2019). Based on the invitation letter from the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Nikolić gave two lectures in Moscow (on April 27 and May 13, 2021) in the building of the Russian Academy of Sciences (“Comparative Analysis of Serbia’s Foreign Trade with Russia and the EU in 2000-2020”; “The Influence of Serbia’s EU Integration Process on its Trade with Third Countries”). On May 21, 2021, based on the invitation of the same institution, Nikolić participated in the international conference (May 21th, 2021): Modern Problems of Relations between the Republics of Former Yugoslavia.

He is often quoted in the scientific literature, among others by John R. Lampe. Five of his working papers were published in journals that are on the SCI reference list. He has published nine books and dozens of scientific papers in the field of foreign trade, international economics, and economic history.

Nikolić had collaborated on a number of studies of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, among others being a contributor for the 2008 White Book of Foreign Investors Council. He was, in 2011, chief editor of EMG Intelligence Unit, a special issue of the EMG Group, which published the Serbian economics magazine Ekonom-East. He was a regular contributor to the magazine Macroeconomic Analysis and Trends (MAT), a monthly issue of Economic Institute (Belgrade). He is a VIP blogger at the B92 site (http://blog.b92.net/blog/9091/Goran-Nikolic/), which covers popularly written economic issues. As a columnist, he wrote many articles for Politika, OKO RTS (https://oko.rts.rs/autori.html?aid=84), Nedeljnik, EU Market, NIN.
