On Thursday, July 4 th , starting at 12 noon, the Institute of European Studies is organizing a
lecture:
The EU’s Normative or Political Power for the Europeanisation of Post-Communist
Europe – lessons from the Western Balkans and the War in Ukraine
This lecture will explore the concept of ‘Normative Power Europe’ (NPE) and how the EU’s
influence through norms has been crucial in post-communist democratization. The discussion
will also cover the limitations of NPE, the impact of EU enlargement fatigue, and recent
geopolitical developments, highlighting the challenges the EU faces in promoting peace and
democracy in its neighborhood.
Dr Milenko Petrović is Jean Monnet Chair and Senior Lecturer Above the Bar and at the
National Centre for Research on Europe and at the Department of Global, Cultural and
Language Studies, University of Canterbury, New Zealand. His research and publications are
focused on problems of post-communist transition in East Central and South-Eastern Europe
and the EU’s eastern enlargement. He has published numerous books and scholarly articles
on comparative politics, post-communist transition, European integration, and EU
enlargement.
