The collection of papers “Media Policy and European Integration” originated from the scientific conference “Media Policy and European Integration: Serbia, Western Balkans, European Union”, which was held on December 4, 2020 at the Institute of European Studies. The conference was organized in cooperation with the Hanns-Seidel Foundation, which also supported the publication of this collection. The primary motive for organizing a scientific discussion dedicated to this topic and publishing its results only partially arose from the regular annual reports of the European Commission, which are consistently critical of the state of the media in the Western Balkans. Therefore, one direction of the research of the authors of this collection is aimed at understanding the problems arising from harmonization and the efforts of the scientific community to contribute to the improvement of this process with its proposals. The second group of questions focuses on the permanent transformations that occur in the structure and the concept itself
media at the beginning of the 21st century. These changes in 2020 were marked by specific oscillations under the influence of the corona virus pandemic; in a somewhat longer perspective, the dynamics of change in the media sphere is determined by technological and political processes, and in the countries of the Western Balkans, media transformation is taking place under the additional burden of the belated democratic transition. The third group of issues touches on the relationship between the media and the political organization of society. The key guiding idea in organizing the conference as well as this manuscript was to theoretically re-examine and test in practice the capacity of dialogical pluralism – regardless of their ideological affinities or value orientations, the authors were invited to sketch intriguing issues they recognized as worth discussing. they articulate the directions of their interpretations with scientific methodology.
